Benedict Carpenter van Barthold

Lecturer, School of Art & Design, Nottingham Trent University

I am Dr. Benedict Carpenter van Barthold, a practising artist who has been teaching in UK art schools since 1998. I have also held leadership roles in Higher Education and arts administration. As an artist, I have achieved numerous accolades, such as winning the Jerwood Sculpture Prize in 2001 and exhibiting at the Venice Biennale, Arsenale in 2005. My work can be found in the British Museum in London and various museum collections in Europe.

I am passionate about creating opportunities for artists and ensuring that these opportunities are sustainable, and I work with Vieunite and Imprimo to help achieve this aim. I also serve as a Trustee of the Phoenix, a centre for independent cinema, art, and digital culture in Leicester; and I am proud to be a Trustee of UK New Artists, an organization that supports emerging artists and the next generation of creativity.

I hold a PhD from Manchester Metropolitan University and a Masters degree in Sculpture from the Royal College of Art. My areas of interest include art history, film, sculpture, art medals, and material knowledge.
