Benjamin Barton

Associate Profesor of Politics and International Relations, University of Nottingham

I'm a Franco-British academic, currently based at the University of Nottingham's campus in Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur) where I teach a variety of courses on European and Asian Area Studies. In terms of research, my expertise revolves around the security, economic and geopolitical components of China's Maritime Silk Road Initiative (more specifically with regard to the roll-out of this Initiative across parts of East Africa and the Indian Ocean Region). I recently authored the following manuscript: The Doraleh Disputes - Infrastructure Politics in the Global South (Singapore: Palgrave Macmillan, 2022).

Outside of academia, I've also worked in other sectors, notably consulting and grant writing/project management for companies in Brussels and Paris. I graduated with a PhD in War Studies from the joint doctoral programme run by King's College London and The University of Hong Kong in 2016. I'm also a graduate of the College of Europe (MA) and the University of Sussex (BA).
