Benjamin T H Smart

Director, The Centre for Philosophy of Epidemiology Medicine and Public Health, University of Johannesburg

Professor Smart (bsmart@uj.ac.za) is director of UJ's Centre for Philosophy of Epidemiology, Medicine and Public Health, and Associate Professor of Philosophy.

His research interests concern various issues in Philosophy of Medicine and Population Health, with a particular focus on the metaphysics of causation and causal inference in the medical sciences. Professor Smart is author of "Concepts and Causes in the Philosophy of Disease" (Palgrave Macmillan, 2016) as well as numerous articles in international philosophy and medical journals, and co-author (with Professor Olaf Dammann) of "Causation in Population Health Informatics and Data Science"
