Benny Giay is a theologian, social anthropologist, and an activist.

He completed his undergraduate studies in social work from Cendrawasih University in Jayapura, before completing his Master of Divinity in Manila, Philippines in 1983. He received his doctorate degree in social anthropology from the Free University in The Netherlands,

Giay is ordained as a pastor in the Kemah Injil Church (KINGMI) (Gospel Tabernacle Church). In 2010 assumed leadership of the Kingmi Synod of the Evangelical Christian Church of West Papua.

Giay was born in 1955 into a family from the Melanesian Me tribe.
