Postdoctoral Research Fellow | AI for early detection of breast cancer in a real-world screening pop. | Expertise in Machine Learning | Digital Health | Pathology Data Mining | Evidence Synthesis | PhD in Epidemiology & Pop. Health, Australian National University

Busayo Israel Ajuwon is a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow. He co-leads a funded Artificial Intelligence (AI) research that seeks to validate and implement AI algorithms for early detection of breast cancer in a real-world Australian screening population.

Busayo develops and applies state-of-the-art machine learning/AI techniques in population health research to improve health outcomes, accelerate discoveries, and deliver real-world impacts. Busayo conducted his Ph.D. research at the National Centre for Epidemiology and Population Health (NCEPH)— Australian National University, mentored by Associate Professor Brett Lidbury. Busayo pioneered a few innovative studies on hepatitis B virus (HBV) and the potential of machine learning in improving patient care, including providing reliable epidemiological estimates to understand the burden of infection and monitor progress towards the global elimination targets; proposing an evidence-based checklist for developing machine learning innovations to enhance safe implementation in routine clinical workflow; developing a machine learning tool that accurately predicts a patient’s HBV infection status, with a suite of real-time decision support; and most recently, clinically validating the generalisability of the machine learning tool and its potential to address HBV problem on a broader scale.

Busayo is recipient of multiple prestigious awards, among which include the 2021 Early Career Research Grant Award by the National Institute for Health Research in the United Kingdom, and the NCEPH Peter Baume’s Graduate Student Award (2022). Busayo has had a significant number of media engagements with The Conversation— a leading international publisher of research-based news and analysis.
