Dr. Chad Painter’s research is guided by the general question: What is the normative role of the media? To answer this question, he specifically focuses on the portrayal of journalists in popular culture; media depictions of gender, race, disability, and sexual orientation; and the historical and contemporary role of the alternative press in the U.S. media ecology. His research focuses on the areas of media ethics, diversity studies, entertainment studies, sports communication, history, and new media. He has authored or co-authored five book chapters and case studies, 11 journal articles, and 23 conference papers. He also has presented as part of three academic panels. He currently serves as the Vice Head/Programming Chair for the AEJMC Media Ethics Division.
Dr. Painter’s primary teaching areas are media ethics, media law, and news writing and reporting. He also has developed and taught courses in communication methods, global media, and communication theory. Dr. Painter’s teaching philosophy includes improving students’ critical thinking abilities by mixing the theoretical with the practical while enabling students to synthesize, justify, evaluate, and analyze academic material. In addition to his academic work, Dr. Painter has eight years of professional experience as a reporter, editor, and public relations practitioner for print and online publications.
