Daniel E. Sutherland is Distinguished Professor of History, University of Arkansas. The recipient of more than fifty awards, honors, and grants, he is best known for his acclaimed series of books chronicling nineteenth-century America. The most recent of his fifteen books include A Savage Conflict: The Decisive Role of Guerrillas in the American Civil War (University of North Carolina Press, 2009) and a biography of James McNeill Whistler, Whistler: A Life for Art's Sake (Yale University Press, 2014). He is currently at work on a biography of Anna Whistler, better known as "Whistler's Mother."
