Dr. Scott grew up in Williams Lake in the interior of British Columbia. Completing his Bachelor of Arts in history and political science at the University of Victoria in 1997, David was awarded his teacher certification at Simon Fraser University in 2001. After teaching English for a year in Japan and high school English and social studies for three years in his hometown, David completed his master’s of education at the University of Alberta in 2009. David then relocated to Calgary where he taught Humanities 8 and 9 at Connect Charter School for four years. Aided by a Bombardier SSHRC scholarship, David defended his dissertation in the Spring of 2016.

RESEARCH & SCHOLARLY ACTIVITY
David’s research explores the ways social studies teachers in Alberta are interpreting and pedagogically responding to the curricular directive to engage social studies from Aboriginal perspectives. As Director of Student Experiences for the Community-Based B.Ed. Program, David is additionally collaborating with Writing Support Services to develop and evaluate a series of online interactive learning modules that address the academic writing needs of students within this new program.

David is assistant editor for the peer-reviewed journal Canadian Social Studies and editor for the Alberta Teachers’ Association Social Studies Council Focus Newsletter. He is also an active member of the History Education Network/Histoire et Éducation en Réseau (THEN/HiER), and has been additionally involved in the Werklund School of Education’s Indigenous Education Task Force. Within the area of curriculum leadership and design, David co-wrote with Dr. Sharon Friesen a review of the research literature on inquiry-based for Alberta Education published on the Inspiring Education website. In addition, he recently self-published a digital resource on historical inquiry that includes videos, links to relevant sites, and examples of student work: http://goo.gl/RvTTUE.
