Elizabeth Wissinger

Professor of Fashion Studies, CUNY Graduate Center

Elizabeth Wissinger's research focuses on fashion, technology, and bodies.

She is an Associate Professor of Sociology at City University of New York, at the Graduate Center and BMCC, where she teaches Fashion Studies and Sociology. She is now focusing on wearable technology and the issues it raises regarding the downloadable, accessible, productive, enhanced, and optimal body.

Her book This Year’s Model: Fashion, Media, and the Making of Glamour tells the story of how models sell the ‘glamour labor’ of working to look like one’s highly edited, #nofilter, selfied image in the flesh. Glamour labor normalizes formerly specialized practices from the modeling world, making the work to stay “in” fashion seem a viable path to the good life.
