I'm a historian of childhood and warfare in modern Europe. My first book, Empire's Children: Child Emigration, Welfare, and the Decline of the British World, 1869-1967, was published by Cambridge in 2014 and won the Grace Abbott book prize. My current research centers on the themes of risk and survival within modern British culture. I'm interested in how ordinary men and women imagined their own and their society's survival in the era of total war, atomic weaponry, and climate change.
