Emily Tanner is Head of the Children, Families and Work team at NatCen Social Research, which has 20 researchers working across wide-ranging policy areas using the full range of research methodologies.

Over the last 17 years, Emily’s research has focused on education policy spanning early childhood to youth transitions. Emily specializes in quantitative methods and impact evaluations and her work feeds directly into policy development at a central government level. Emily is currently Principal Investigator on the Out of School Activities project for the Nuffield Foundation and leads the consortium for the Evaluation of Children's Centres in England (ECCE).

Emily has a passion for school-based research and leads a working group aimed at improving the way NatCen engages schools in research. Before joining NatCen in 2005, Emily held research posts at Yale University and at the University of Oxford, where she also completed a DPhil in social policy.
