Associate Professor, Clinical Microbiology, RCSI University of Medicine and Health Sciences

Eoghan O'Neill is Associate Professor in the Department of Clinical Microbiology at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI), Dublin and a Consultant Microbiologist in Connolly Hospital, Dublin 15.

His research team investigates both the pathogenesis and treatment of staphylococcal biofilm. A biofilm is an adherent group of bacterial cells that become encased in a slime layer; up to 80% of human bacterial infections are said to involve bacteria within a biofilm. Over recent years, this research group has been at the international forefront of investigating both the mechanisms of staphylococcal biofilm formation in vitro using in vivo like models of infection and investigating novel therapeutics to treat staphylococcal biofilm infections in vivo.
