Associate professor of Ancient History, University of Minnesota

I've been teaching and doing research in the history and languages of the ancient Near East for more than two decades. My scholarly publications include numerous peer-reviewed articles as well as a monograph, State and Society in the Late Bronze Age (2008), and co-authored or co-edited works. I also write for non-specialist publications and the popular press on occasion. My current research focuses on the conceptualization and practice of freedom in ancient societies. I am at present working on a book titled Freedom and Governance in the Ancient Near East.
