Fiona McLeod is a PhD candidate at the University of Queensland in the discipline of history. Her thesis investigates the experiences of Australian Army Nursing Service personnel in World War I, and asks how they encountered and ameliorated the traumatic impact of service on their physical , psychological and emotional well-being. It interrogates nurses' letters, diaries and memoirs to reveal the sights, sounds and smells of active service, and the strategies and behaviours they adopted both during the war and on their return to civilian life. Fiona's MPhil research examined patriotic women in Australia and their responses to World War I.
