Frank’s main research interests are in film history, US cinema and popular culture, film and television comedy, film noir, stardom, popular music, the Hollywood Left, radio broadcasting in the US (1930s-1960s), stardom, contemporary US television, and issues of cultural representation. Besides being the author of several acclaimed monographs and edited collections, his articles have been published in leading international screen journals since the 1980s. Frank’s groundbreaking work on comedy, film noir and masculinity has had substantial influence on debates in film studies, and is used extensively on university courses, in film studies and beyond, across the world. He is currently researching for a new book on 'radio noir', and for articles on stardom and labour, the controversy over children and 1940s radio serials, and the role of seriality in studio-era Hollywood.
