Professor Gail Matthews is an Infectious Diseases Physician and Program Head, Therapeutic Research and Vaccine Program at The Kirby Institute, She is also Head of Infectious Diseases at St Vincent’s Hospital, Sydney. She is a UNSW Scientia Fellow and holds an NHMRC Career Development Fellowship. Her particular interests are in HIV/ viral hepatitis co-infection and COVID-19. She completed her PhD in 2009 on therapeutic strategies in HIV/HBV coinfection.

Research Interests:
General areas of interest include therapeutic research in the fields of HIV, viral hepatitis (hepatitis B and hepatitis C), and COVID-19. Specific areas of research interest include acute hepatitis C infection, HIV-HBV coinfection, long term sequelae of COVID-19 as well as infections in people who inject drugs.
