Gary got was awarded his PhD in 2003 at Manchester Metropolitan University, on the topic of ‘The Marketing of Urban Places with Specific Reference to Retailing’. Prior to that, Gary was awarded an MSc Marketing from University of Salford (1993), a Certificate in Education from Liverpool Polytechnic/Bolton Institute of Higher Education (1989), a C.N.A.A. Postgraduate Diploma in Marketing from Newcastle-upon-Tyne Polytechnic (1983) and a B.A. (Hons) History Second Class (Division I) from University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne (1982).

His previous roles have included Professor of Marketing in the School of Materials at the University of Manchester (2013 – 2016), Reader in Marketing at the University of Liverpool Management School (2011–2013), Senior Lecturer in Marketing at the University of Liverpool Management School (2007–2011), Senior Lecturer in Marketing at the University of Salford (2001–2007) and Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in Marketing at Manchester Metropolitan University (1991-2001)
