Guangwu’s expertise lies in carbon and energy accounting and reporting, covering cities, industries, companies and households. He has supported a diverse range of business and government clients to achieve environmental and productivity gains through analysis and reporting. With an in-depth knowledge of carbon neutrality and energy efficiency, Guangwu is often engaged to provide accounting systems management, modelling and reviews of climate change adaptation schemes, identifying cost-effective reduction opportunities and adopting science-based targets.
During the past five years, Guangwu has been working with various industry partners such as the international organisation C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group,consulting firm Arup U.K., and Australian government agencies. Guangwu has accounted for the carbon footprint of more than 100 cities including Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth, Brisbane and Gold Coast, as proven in his publications. Guangwu has also worked as a reviewer and has contributed to the international accounting standards including Corporate Value Chain (Scope 3) Accounting and Reporting Standard and Global Protocol for Community-Scale Greenhouse Gas Emission Inventories (GPC).
Guangwu also specialises in carbon footprint accounting and reporting for corporates that engage in digital economy and peer-to-peer(P2P) sharing economies such as Airbnb. By using the sophisticated LCA/IOA tools, not only are the carbon emissions embodied in company’s supply-chains made traceable; but also the emissions embodied corporate’s outsourced services are quantified.
Prior to joining Pangolin Associates, Guangwu was an international exchange postdoctoral research fellow and then an assistant professor at the Institute of National Accounts, Beijing Normal University, China from 2018 to 2020. Guangwu now also serves as a visiting research fellow at the University of New South Wales in 2020.
Guangwu is the author of over 20 peer-reviewed academic publications in the fields of low-carbon city and sustainable consumption with over 500 citations and an H index of 10 in 2021. He also serves as a regular reviewer for 15 peer-reviewed academic journals. Guangwu has presented the related topics multiple times in domestic and international academic conferences, and he was appointed as a section chair of the Environmental Extended Input-Output Analysis at the 2019 International Society of Industrial Ecology Biennial Conference.
Guangwu holds a Ph.D degree of Environmental Engineering from the University of New South Wales, awarded in 2017. During his Ph.D he completed the pilot project on the three-scope city-scale carbon inventory and accounted for major Australian cities in a thesis titled “City-scale carbon accounting and mitigation analysis”. Guangwu’s qualifications also include a Master’s degree in Environmental Engineering and a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, specializing in Heating, Ventilation and Air-conditioning (certified by Engineers Australia). Guangwu’s passion is to bridge industrial demands and university-based research, applying scientific methods and theories to industrial practices and enhancing corporate sustainability.
