Emeritus Professor at the MRC Centre for Regenerative Medicine, The University of Edinburgh

Ian Wilmut was Emeritus Professor at the MRC Centre for Regenerative Medicine at the University of Edinburgh. A pioneering embryologist, he was the leader of the research group that in 1996 first cloned a mammal, a sheep named Dolly. In 2008 he was knighted in the New Year Honours for services to science. Sir Ian announced his diagnosis with Parkinson's disease in 2018, and became a patron of a research programme set up to enable trials of a new generation of therapies that aim to slow the progression of the disease. He died in September 2023.
