Jair Garcia researches how vision operates in complex environments. Nearly everything we do centres around some form of visual processing of information, but surprisingly, little is currently known about how vision operates in complex environments when there is a lot of distracting information that can lead to costly mistakes. With the recent rapid advances in digital imaging it is now become possible to capture high quality linearized representations of complex scenes, and robustly analyse how these are visually processed, and subsequently interpreted by individuals. Using eye tracking equipment it then enables an understanding of how visual search and decision making operate when viewing custom digital images modelling different observers, with broad implications for understanding design in a complex and rapidly changing world.
