Reader in Mobile Communications, University of Strathclyde

James is a Reader at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, and was elected Executive Vice President of IEEE VTS for 2020. He is also a Working Group Co-chair of the IEEE Future Networks Initiative, which was formerly the 5G Initiative.

With over 25 years experience in mobile radio research and in managing major collaborative programmes, his career started on the RACE ATMDA project in 1994 defining 3G technology, where he was responsible for assessing system performance. Between 1997 and 2011 he was Academic Co-ordinator of 3 Work Areas in the Mobile VCE project. He is currently the Academic Lead for the Communications and Systems Integration activity at the Power Networks Demonstration Centre. Within IEEE, he chaired the Standards Education Committee for 4 years and led the development of the IEEE Standards University, a joint activity between the Educational Activity Board and the Standards Association.

Author of over 150 papers and 7 patents, James has acted as an expert witness in a range of patent cases on 2G, 3G and 4G standards, testifying both in the High Court in London and The Hague.
