Dr Jan Zwar is a Postdoctoral Fellow at Macquarie University with Prof David Throsby and Dr Tom Longden researching structural changes in the Australian book industry and responses by authors, publishers and readers. Her research is cross-disciplinary, drawing upon cultural economics, marketing, Australian literature, publishing studies and book history. She is particularly interested in research projects with commercial and cultural dimensions.
In 2013 she assisted the Book Industry Collaborative Council in drafting their final report on the future of Australia’s book industry. In 2015 she served as a member of the judging panel for the business stream of the Australian Book Industry Awards.
Dr Zwar completed a cross-disciplinary PhD in Economics and English at Macquarie University under Prof. Throsby’s supervision, examining ‘Cultural value and books in public debate in Australia 2003-2008’. She lectures in marketing, which provides useful insights into the changes affecting the book industry, and participates in publishing studies and Australian literature conferences and seminars.
Prior to academia, she worked as a multimedia producer at the ABC on a number of award-winning projects, as a business development executive for a professional online education specialist, and on media policy for the federal Department of Industry.
