Associate professor emeritus, Journalism, Virginia Commonwealth University

I retired from full-time teaching in 2020 after 23 years at VCU. Before that, I spent more than two decades as a newspaper reporter and editor in Texas, Arizona and Virginia. My students won more than 65 awards for political reporting and other coverage. I received teaching awards from VCU and the Society of Professional Journalists, as well as Fulbright grants and other fellowships to teach and train journalists in China, Mongolia and Ukraine. I also have won several awards for my reporting. As both a journalist and a journalism educator, I have carved out a specialty in using technology to find, report and tell powerful news stories.
