Jennifer Geddes-McAlister

I began my appointment as Assistant Professor in the Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology at the University of Guelph in July 2018. I am an expert in mass spectrometry-based proteomics following an Alexander von Humboldt post-doctoral fellowship at the Max Planck Institute of Biochemistry (Germany) in the lab of world-renowned leader, Prof. Dr. Matthias Mann. I also have extensive experience with fungal pathogens and their interactions with the host following my PhD in Microbiology and Immunology at the University of British Columbia. At Guelph, my research program aims to define the relationship between host and pathogen during infection to uncover new strategies for overcoming resistance in both medically- and agriculturally-relevant diseases. Since beginning my independent position, I have published 45 papers (lifetime total of 52), raised over $5.1 M in funding through grants, awards, and industry partnerships, and currently, manages a group of over 30 trainees. I am the elected President and elected Board member for the Canadian National Proteomics Network (CNPN), co-Founder of the Canadian Proteomics and Artificial Intelligence Research and Training Consortium, and the elected Western Hemisphere Diversity Candidate for the Human Proteome Organization. I also recently founded ‘Moms in Proteomics’, an initiative dedicated to mentoring and supporting mothers in STEM, developed the CNPN Unity initiative to promote equity, diversity, and inclusion in proteomics research and training across Canada, and I am co-creator of Humans of HUPO to highlight our diverse and productive membership. I was recently awarded a Banting Foundation Research Award (2020) for my novel approach to combatting fungal pathogens, as well as the Ontario Early Researcher Award (2022), and the CNPN New Investigator Award (2022).
