Jens-Christian Svenning

Professor of ecology, Aarhus University

Jens-Christian Svenning is an ecologist, who works broadly with the field and beyond, e.g., human geography. His work is focused on basic questions such as what determines species distributions, what drives geographical gradients in ecological community structure and biodiversity, and what is the role of climate, with special attention to megabiota (trees and megafauna). At the same time, he is strongly engaged in understanding how human activities are reshaping the biosphere via climate change, globalization and land use, and pathways for enhancing sustainability and redirecting dynamics towards maintaining Earth's rich biodiversity on a human-dominated planet. Methodologically, his research combines ecoinformatics-based approaches and remote sensing with field-based studies around the world as well as interdisciplinary work with archaeologists, epidemiologists, agronomists etc.
