Jeremy David Engels

Sherwin Early Career Professor in the Rock Ethics Institute, and Associate Professor of Communication Arts and Sciences, Pennsylvania State University

Jeremy David Engels studies the rhetoric and philosophy of American democracy. His research asks the question, what practices of the care of the self are necessary for us to be confident, competent, capable democratic citizens?

He is the author of The Art of Gratitude (2018), The Politics of Resentment: A Genealogy (2015), and Enemyship: Democracy and Counter-Revolution in the Early Republic (2010). For his work, he has been awarded the Karl Wallace Award and the New Investigator Award from the National Communication Association. Jeremy is also an yoga teacher and the co-owner of Yoga Lab Studio in State College, PA. Based on research he has completed in the U.S., Europe, and India, he is currently completing a new book that describes the influence of Indian philosophy on American democratic thought currently titled Kosmos: Reading Democracy Alongside Walt Whitman and the Bhagavad Gita.
