Jeremy David Engels

Jeremy David Engels studies the rhetoric of American democracy. His research asks the question, what practices of the care of the self are necessary for us to be confident, competent, capable participants in democracy and the struggle for social justice?

He is the author of The Art of Gratitude (2018), The Politics of Resentment: A Genealogy (2015), and Enemyship: Democracy and Counter-Revolution in the Early Republic (2010). For his work, he has been awarded the Karl Wallace Award and the New Investigator Award from the National Communication Association. Jeremy is also an yoga teacher and the co-owner of Yoga Lab Studio in State College, PA. He is currently completing a new book titled Yoga and the Good Life: Lessons from American Transcendentalism, which investigates how yoga philosophy has informed American democratic thought.
