Dr Joanne Steel is a speech pathologist with a clinical and research interest in adults with communication disorders following an acquired brain injury. Her PhD research investigated cognitive communication recovery during post-traumatic amnesia and has informed speech pathology assessment in the post-acute period after traumatic brain injury. She is currently a Lecturer in adult neurogenic communication disability at the University of Newcastle, and postdoctoral research fellow at The University of Technology, Sydney (UTS) working on research funded by the National Health and Medical Research Council. She is a research affiliate in Moving Ahead CRE in Brain Recovery, aiming for translation of brain injury research into clinical practice.
