Joelien Pretorius

Associate Professor in Political Studies, University of the Western Cape

Joelien Pretorius lectures International Relations at the University of the Western Cape. She is a member of the Pugwash Conferences on Science and World Affairs that was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1995 for its work on nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament along with Sir Joseph Rotblat. Rotblat worked on the Manhatten project but left it on moral grounds before the first atom bomb was developed. He and other nuclear scientists in the Pugwash movement have informed Pretorius's views on nuclear weapons and continue to inspire her academic work in pursuit of a safer and peaceful world.
