From this basic science focus has developed a strong commitment to applying reproductive biology to the practical conservation of marsupials and the fertility based management of overabundant, or in New Zealand pest, marsupials.

From 1995-2003 John was Director of the Cooperative Research Centre for the the Conservation and Management of Marsupials the only nationally funded centre dedicated to innovation in responding to challenges in conserving and managing our unique marsupials
