After medical school, (Oxford and The Middlesex Hospital), Professor Cole researched in Oxford before training in clinical neurophysiology in Southampton. He now works in Poole Hospital and at the University of Bournemouth. His main research interest has been in sensory loss and motor control. He also has an interest in the first person experience of neurological conditions and has written books on the consequences of deafferentation, of facial disfigurement and spinal cord injury.

He is current President of the Europe, Middle East and Africa Chapter of the International Federation of Clinical Neurophysiology and sits on the IFCN executive.
