Jonathan Rogers

I wrote my doctorate at UCL on the subject of exculpatory defences in criminal law, and then started my academic career at Brunel University (2000) before moving to UCL as a lecturer in 2002. I left UCL, as an Associate Professor in Criminal Justice, in 2018 to take up my present position at Cambridge. During the end of my time at UCL, I directed the Centre of Criminal Law and joined the Editorial Board of the Criminal Law Review. I am Co-Deputy Director of Cambridge Centre for Criminal Justice.

My research is largely doctrinal in nature, but I also strongly believe in the value of engaging practitioners and the wider community as well as legal scholars. To that end, I co-direct a new network of some 50 scholars and practitioners, Criminal Law Reform Now, which aims to set up project teams to consider contemporary problems which may require reform and to seek ways to bring them to the attention of policymakers. We recently received AHRC funding and are currently researching problem with the Computer Misuse Act 1990, especially as it applies to testing and correcting vulnerabilities on websites, while I myself am committed to lead a research project on the regulation of private prosecutions within the auspices of this network over the next two years.
