I am interested in good public policy, regardless of the field, though my expertise is in fiscal policy - the budget - and national security. I've worked in both for around 30 years. What is good policy? Good policy solves problems effectively, efficiently and fairly. It should be evidence based and, when evidence is not available should be grounded in our understanding of human behaviour. If it doesn't work, change it or stop it. Pet hates: self interest masquerading as the national interest, lack of civility. Likes most: self awareness and awareness of the positions of others. In any truly rational discussion one must be able to answer the question: "What evidence would cause me to abandon my view?" If you cannot answer that about your most deeply held beliefs, then what you have is faith and not reason.
