Professor for Plant Cell Biology and Biotechnology, University of Leeds

Born and educated in Belgium, I moved to Sweden in 1991 and later to the UK in 1994. I speak German, Dutch, French, English, Portuguese, Spanish and a little Swedish, and look forward to learning more languages. I enjoy teaching, I’m interested in pure and applied research, I love unexpected results and try to resist peer pressure whenever it makes sense. When there is time, and when my team allows me, I work at the bench and do some of the experiments myself, mostly to explore some unexpected avenue of our research and usually related to the functioning of a gene product within the context of a viable cell. My hobbies include property development (kitchen, conservatories, greenhouses), the regular maintenance of an allotment with vegetables, reading books, cooking and baking, martial arts, building windsurf boards (slalom and wave) and of course windsurfing…
