Associate Professor of American History, University of East Anglia

I am a historian of the United States and the world. My interests lie in the forces shaping U.S. foreign relations, especially the interaction of national and transnational factors and domestic and foreign influences, in twentieth century international history. I specialise in the cold war; foreign affairs; state secrecy culture; protest and dissent; intelligence; first amendment speech rights; and modern Italy. My publications include Whistleblowing Nation: The History of National Security Disclosures and the Cult of State Secrecy (New York, 2020) and Waging Political Warfare: The United States, Italy, and the Origins of Cold War (Cambridge, 2014).
