Kalpana Surendranath

Senior Lecturer in Molecular biology and Microbiology, Leader of Genome Engineering Lab, University of Westminster

Currently, I am a faculty of Biomedical Sciences at the University of Westminster, London, United Kingdom. I contribute to both undergraduate and post graduate teaching at the University. I also lead the Genome Engineering Laboratory (www.westmingenlab.com) which focuses on applications of CRISPR genome editing technology in assessing human DNA repair networks as therapeutic targets. Our facility not only uses CRISPR human genome engineering extensively but also trains students at all levels to excel in it. In the recent past, my laboratory has received several fellowships and awards including the best project award from Royal Society of Biology at the houses of parliament. I have been chosen by the University to undertake Aurora Advance HE women leadership program in higher education and currently serve as an Aurora-UK role model. In recognition of my exceptional contribution to research and teaching, I was awarded the Vice-Chancellor’s WestminSTAR award and the award of individual teaching, learning excellence in May 2019 and the Women of Westminster award in March 2020.
