Karine Varley is Lecturer in French and European History at the University of Strathclyde. She is the author of Under the Shadow of Defeat: The War of 1870-71 in French Memory (2008), and has published widely on memory and commemoration. She has also worked on UK-French relations in the Second World War, collaborating with British Embassy in Paris and the French Embassy in London. Her forthcoming book is on the Vichy French regime, entitled: Vichy’s Double Bind: French Axis Entanglements and Relations with Fascist Italy, 1940-1943. She is developing a new project on the legacies of the Franco-Prussian War and has expertise in Corsican history.
