Professor of Educational Psychology & Learning, Faculty of Education, The University of Melbourne

Kate is Professor of Psychology and Learning at the University of Melbourne Faculty of Education. She moved from the Australian National University and joined the Learning Intervention Group which includes Educational Psychology in August 2022. The problems humans face as a species–from social cohesion to health and energy consumption–all require behaviour change as part of the solution. An overarching aim of her research is to develop more effective models of the psychology of behaviour change informed by the social identity perspective which highlights the impact of groups and group norms on individual’s attitudes, well-being and behaviour (e.g., Turner & Reynolds, 2012). Much of her current research is focused on education contexts and the role of schools as group systems in supporting student motivation, engagement, academic achievement, well-being and mental health.
