Kathleen Carey has published extensively on hospitals and on the effects of organizational structure on provider performance, with particular interest in the determinants of hospital and other health care costs. She has developed new methods of hospital cost analysis and has adapted state-of-the-art econometric models to the study of hospital cost functions. She has applied these in numerous ways, including study of the effects of patient lengths of hospitalization and hospital size on costs, as well as measurement of the hospital cost/quality trade-off. She has authored a number of studies that investigate the effects of organizational change in the hospital industry on competition and cost efficiency. She is currently conducting an AHRQ study that investigates the relationship between hospital length of stay and costly readmission. Dr. Carey is on the Editorial Board of Medical Care Research and Review.
