Kevin Grisham

I have served as the Department Chair for the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies since 2017 and also serve as a Professor of Global Studies within the department at California State University, San Bernardino (CSUSB). Additionally, I serve as the Coordinator of the Social Science and Globalization Master of Arts Program at CSUSB. As related to my research and my area of scholarship, I serve as the Associate Director of the Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism at CSUSB.

My scholarship since the 1990s has focused on political violence in all of its forms including international and domestic terrorism. Relatedly, for the past 20 years, I have studied hate and political violence connected to hate. I study recruitment activity and the transformation of violent political movements of all kinds in a variety of locations around the globe including the United States, the Middle East, and North Africa, Western Europe, and Latin America. My regional expertise is the Middle East and North Africa and the United States. I worked as the Program Officer for the Yemen Language Center in Sana'a, Yemen, from 1999 to 2000 and have traveled to various other locations in the world for research and teaching-related activities (including Ireland, Czech Republic, South Korea, Germany, and Canada).

I am the author of The Transformation of Violent Political Movements: Rebels Today, What Tomorrow (Routledge, 2014) and three other textbooks about the developing world and world regional geography and globalization.

I previously served as the Vice President of the National Collegiate Conference Association (NCCA), a non-governmental organization with an affiliation with the United Nations. I am regularly interviewed by various news outlets in the U.S. and overseas, including BBC WorldNews, Newsweek, Asahi Shimbun (Japan), various NPR affiliates, and RollingStone Magazine. I regularly speak around the U.S. on issues related to terrorism and violent political movements around the globe and inside of the U.S.
