Dr Leif Hanlen received a Bachelor of Computer Science and Bachelor of Engineering in Electrical Engineering from the University of Newcastle, Australia, in 1999. His undergraduate studies were supported by Pacific Power and TransGrid. He received a PhD in telecommunications in 2004 from the University of Newcastle.

Dr. Leif Hanlen works within Data61, where he focusses on unlocking absorptive capacity and developing new industries. Leif has over 15 years’ experience in ICT research including text analytics, sports technology, wearable radio systems and radio propagation. He is an adjunct Associate Professor (ICT) at ANU and an adjunct Professor (Health) at University of Canberra.

He has previously been employed as Technology Director for Machine Learning at NICTA, CS lecturer in Newcastle University and Singapore. His current work includes developing technology to converting legislation into a computable platform and combining unstructured data.
