Prior to his election as executive dean at the Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University, Professor Lekan Ayo-Yusuf was director of academic affairs of the School of Oral Health Sciences and served as the CEO of the MEDUNSA Oral Health Centre, under the University of Limpopo. He started his career at the University of Pretoria where he developed tobacco control curriculum for Oral Hygiene and for Master of Public Health graduate programmes, where he was eventually given an extraordinary professorship. He was also the American Cancer Society grant recipient and appointed as the director of the Southern Africa Resilient Africa Innovation Lab (RiLab), a USAID-funded project to develop innovative solutions to development challenges related to building resilience of African communities following exposure to 'shocks' and 'stresses'.
