Research Manager, School of Rehabilitation Therapy, Queen's University, Ontario

Currently working as the Research Manager, "Not Deciding Alone" project with Queen's University, under the direction of Janet Jull, Assistant Professor. Working to develop and assess a shared decision making strategy. Board member and Audit Committee member: Pauktuutit Inuit Women of Canada. Previous Committee: Urban Sub-Working Group, Missing and Murdered Indigenous and Girls 2SLGBTQ+. Malaya and her husband also have an Inuit owned consulting business, Malti Consulting Ltd. Working with Inuit organizations and Government of Nunavut.

Malaya has over 17 years experience as Corporate Secretary for the Nunasi Corporation (and many subsidiaries), in addition to having served as Director for five large organizations and as Corporate Secretary for 11 Boards, Malaya Zehr has first-hand experience with Board membership, corporate governance, human resources and administration in connection with organizations doing business in/with the North.

Mentored by Board members representing all three Nunavut regions (Baffin, Kitikmeot and Kivalliq), Malaya also has a unique understanding of and ability to guide organizations within and between regions. From her time with Nunasi, Malaya has experienced the many governance changes over the years – insight that is frequently sought-after by the Regional Inuit Associations (RIA’s), Regional Development Corporations (RDC’s) and Government.

Malaya is an accomplished professional and highly skilled bridge between private sectors and government. Born and raised in Iqaluit, Nunavut, Malaya is proud of her Inuit heritage and speaks, reads and writes Inuktitut – driven to better the lives of all Nunavumiut through employment, training, development and mentorship. Malaya currently lives in Gatineau, Quebec with her husband Tim, she has 3 grown children, 3 step-children and 3 grandchildren.
