Dr Hutchinson's research interests include evolution, relationships and the distribution and conservation of Australian reptiles.

He studied for his undergraduate and PhD degrees at La Trobe University in Melbourne before gaining postdoctoral experience at the Philadelphia Academy of Natural Sciences and the University of Illinois.

He joined the South Australian Museum in April 1990, and also lectures in environmental and biological sciences at Flinders and Adelaide Universities.
