Martyn Smith is a historian of modern and contemporary Japan. He is the author of ‘Sound hunting in postwar Japan: recording technology, aurality, mobility, and consumerism’, Sound Studies: Vol 7, No. 1, 2021, and editor of Asian Sound Cultures: Voice, Noise, Sound, Technology, (London: Routledge, 2023). His first monograph was Mass Media, Consumerism and National Identity in Postwar Japan, (London: Bloomsbury, 2018). His recent research takes an interdisciplinary approach to the study of sound and the history of technology in Japan and Asia and his long-standing research interests cover national identity, nationalism, gender, the mass media and consumer society in Japan and East Asia.
