Mathias Pessiglione

Mathias Pessiglione est coresponsable de l’équipe Motivation, cerveau et comportement de l’ICM. Chercheur Inserm, il est coresponsable du programme CogMaster (École normale supérieure, Paris) et psychologue clinicien à l’hôpital de la Pitié-Salpêtrière. Il est titulaire d’une maîtrise ès sciences en neurosciences et d’une maîtrise en sciences cognitives, d’une thèse en sciences cognitives de l’Université Pierre et Marie Curie (2003) et d’une qualification de psychologue clinicien (2004).

L’équipe de Mathias Pessiglione cherche à comprendre les mécanismes cérébraux qui sous-tendent les processus motivationnels : pourquoi nous plaçons nos espoirs dans certaines opportunités, pourquoi nous préférons certaines options à d’autres ou pourquoi nous dépensons tellement d’efforts dans certaines activités. Pour cela, elle combine trois approches complémentaires : les neurosciences cognitives chez l’homme, la neurophysiologie dans des modèles expérimentaux et la modélisation computationnelle, essentielle pour relier quantitativement les différents niveaux de descriptions.

Mathias Pessiglione is co-leader of the Motivation, brain and behavior team at the ICM. He is co-responsible of the CogMaster program (École Normale Supérieure, Paris) and clinical psychologist at the Pitié-Salpêtrière Hospital. He received a MSc in Neuroscience and one in Cognitive Science, a PhD in Cognitive Science of the Pierre and Marie Curie University in 2003 and a qualification as Clinical Psychologist in 2004.

His team aims at understanding the determinants of behavior (why we do what we do), in both normal and pathological conditions. To this aim we combine different scientific approaches: human cognitive neuroscience, experimental neurophysiology, and computational modeling. Our fundamental objective is to elucidate the brain mechanisms that form goals and translate them into particular behaviors. As clinical applications we develop tools that allow inferring predictive markers for a variety of psychiatric and neurological diseases in which motivation is deficient (as in apathy) or uncontrolled (as in impulsivity).
