There are currently no animal welfare laws protecting insects, meaning they can be legally subjected to invasive and harmful procedures in the research and food industries. However, there is no conclusive evidence that these animals cannot feel pain, and thus they may be suffering due to these lack of laws. The aim of my PhD is to gather evidence as to whether or not insects may feel pain through studying the neurobiology, pharmacology and behaviour of the bumblebee.
