Matthew J. Spittal

Professor of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, The University of Melbourne

Matthew is Professor of Epidemiology and Biostatistics in the Centre for Mental Health. He established and leads the Mental Health Epidemiology Unit – a unit specialising in the design and analysis of studies in mental health, including randomised controlled trials, cohort studies, data linkage studies, case-control studies, sample surveys and meta-analyses.

Matthew has attracted over $35 million in research funding, including a prestigious Australian Research Council Future Fellowship and a Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences Dame Kate Campbell Fellowship. He has published more than 270 articles in peer-reviewed journals, including publications in the New England Journal of Medicine, Lancet Psychiatry, Lancet Public Health , the BMJ and the British Journal of Psychiatry. He is a member of the International Advisory Board for Lancet Psychiatry and Advisory Board member of eClinicalMedicine ( a new Lancet journal that publishes high-quality open-access research).
