Matthew Lockwood

Senior Lecturer in Energy and Climate Policy, University of Sussex

Prior to joining Sussex in December 2018, I was in the Energy Policy Group at the University of Exeter, as a Senior Research Fellow working on innovation and governance in the UK energy system. Before that I was Head of the Climate Change Team at the Institute of Development Studies at Brighton.

My main research interests are in the political economy of climate and energy policy, with a particular focus on the UK in comparative context. I teach on energy and climate policy, and on the politics and governance of energy transitions.

Between 1996 and 2011 I worked in a variety of senior policy roles in the third sector and in UK national and London government. Prior to 1996 I undertook research and teaching on development and social demography, focusing especially on Sub-Saharan Africa. I have an MPhil in economics and a DPhil from the University of Oxford.
