Matthew Pike

Matthew Pike is a Nunatsiavut Inuk originally from Happy Valley – Goose Bay, Labrador. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science and Aboriginal Studies with certificates in Public Administration and Criminology from Memorial University. Also, he holds a Master of Jurisprudence in Energy Law degree from the University of Tulsa, Oklahoma, and currently is a Public Health PhD candidate in the Department of Population Medicine at the University of Guelph, where he is studying community health impacts in Inuit communities located near mining projects.

Matthew just recently finished working for Vale, as the Aboriginal Affairs Superintendent for the Voisey’s Bay mine site located near Nain, Nunatsiavut. Prior to joining Vale in 2018, Matthew moved to Norway/Finland for a five-month assignment with the Arctic Council’s Indigenous Peoples Secretariat. Shortly after this assignment, he led an all-Inuit delegation to the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues at the United Nations General Assembly in New York City. This experience led Matthew to research the health impacts of resource development on Indigenous peoples and communities for his PhD program.
