Michael is Senior Research Fellow in Organisational Behaviour and Leadership at The University of Melbourne, Centre for Workplace Leadership. He was previously Senior Research Fellow at the University of Oxford, Saïd Business School, where he directed a major stream of research on senior leadership development.
Michael's research and teaching focus on the work of senior leadership in highly professionalised, knowledge-intensive settings, especially academic health science organisations. His expertise concentrates on the 'backstage' aspects of organisations, especially the intersection between emotion, relational dynamics and risk.
He publishes in the Financial Times ‘Top 45’ list leading international journals, and he has led major research projects funded by the National Institute of Health Research, the University of Oxford, and King’s College London.
Michael came into academia after a distinguished, clinical and management career as a psychoanalytically trained Consultant Psychotherapist working in the UK’s leading teaching hospitals in Manchester, Liverpool and London.
